Unusual Ways of Saving Money

Everyone tries to save money from time to time.  Saving money is simply a matter of thinking in a different way about things you routinely do.  Here's a few unusual ideas you may not have thought of, that you can incorporate into your normal penny-pinching life.

Make Eating Out Less Expensive

Those who eat out, or go through the fast-food routine can learn to save on those expenses.  The first most obvious one, is to  keep those salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise packets from the fast-food restaurants, and always ask about the specials.  Sometimes there's a two for one promotion.  When dining out at a restaurant, many have those 'eat before 5' specials where you can save.

Brown Bag It - Elsewhere

Most of us are familiar with the idea to make your lunch to save on the costs of eating out, but haven't considered extending beyond that.  Cook some hotdogs at home before a kid's soccer game, and prepare them ahead of time with all the fixings, or just bring along those little packets you've saved from the fast-food places with the meal.

Cheaper in Bulk - For the Single Person

Many grocery stores offer discounted items that will expire in a day or two, or cheaper per-pound price if you purchase more than a certain number.  Take advantage of these deals and split the bulk items into single-serving portions and pop them in your freezer until you need them.  Saving money can be that simple.  Another idea to take advantage of those bulk items - invite coworkers or friends to a picnic like the old days.  Find a great place to have a sit on the grass for lunch or an "after five" get together, and have each one bring something.  Or rotate who will cook/prepare that day.  It's always cheaper to cook for a group, and you might like some things others have prepared that are less expensive than your usual meals, that you hadn't considered before.

Use the Throw-a-Ways

When you have a hobby and are strapped for  materials, remember the recycleables.  Egg cartons can be used in many crafts, and you might even consider the local dumpster.  Flower crafters of artificial flowers can start saving money by checking out the trash dumpsters at cemeteries, churches on a Saturday night (most weddings are on Saturday) or local flower shops to pick up artificial flower remains, such as the green wiring, miscellaneous bows, and decorations.
